Pre-social media # had different connotations than it does today. People all over the world utilized the symbol to reference, number(s), pound(s) or it was merely a button on the dial pad of your flip phone. Much has evolved since those days, including the references of symbols such as #. A symbol that was once used to define pound, is now widely known as a hashtag. Below you will find a better understanding of the purpose of a hashtag and its importance on social media platforms such as: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others.

You may recognize them from platforms such as Instagram, where hashtags are virtually a necessity, and we will explain why. Some use them in every post, others on occasion, and some don’t use them at all. But just what is the purpose of a hashtag. Why is a symbol so important that people flood their Instagram captions with them instead of an actual caption?

Here’s what we can tell you….

If you are seeking to gain any of the following: ad partners, followers, likes, or trying to grow your business through social media, you need to tune in. Hashtags may seem overwhelmingly annoying depending on the type of hashtagger you follow. However, they are an essential tool for marketers. Owners of small businesses and established businesses that have ventured onto the online world understand that hashtags are a vital strategy for growth and success.

You see, a simple # can help you gain relevancy and expose your business to a wider audience. For example, let us pretend that you own an online boutique and want to generate more online sales. When you post a picture of an outfit and caption it, “Fall fashion”, it is most likely only going to get viewed by your current followers and only them unless they share it with a friend. But, if you caption your photo “#fall #fashion”, you will be opening the door to potential customers that follow those hashtags. By simply placing a hashtag in front of those two words, you can gain a new follower, an online sale, and more awareness for your brand. The best part of it all is, it is completely free. #Happy #Hashtaging!
